Dental Implants Monmouth County

Did you know that dental implants can be traced to the Mayans in 600 A.D? But modern technology only dates back to the 1960s when a Swedish orthopedic surgeon named Per-Ingvar Brånemark discovered a process called osseointegration, which is when bone tissue fuses with another material, like titanium. He has been nicknamed the “father of modern dental implantology.” He also revolutionized the fields of maxillofacial and orthopedic rehabilitation.

Today, millions of people have dental implants. Dental implants are a great alternative to broken or missing teeth. Getting an implant is an invasive surgical procedure that positions a screw into your empty gum socket with a prosthetic tooth attached. Implants not only improve mouth functionality but gives you a bright natural appearance as well. At our Monmouth County practice, we are very skilled at inputting dental implants from our positive testimonials and patient satisfaction. Many patients believe that a missing tooth will not harm the rest of your mouth, but in actuality, an empty socket runs the risk of infection, and overtime teeth can shift and become misaligned. Speak to one of our dental professionals to find out if a dental implant may be right for you. While archaeologists keep finding signs of primitive techniques to cure tooth decay and pain, modern patients enjoy more durable and comfortable dental solutions. Advancements in dental technology, research, and procedures have improved on Per-Ingvar Brånemark’s work. Today, dental implants are the preferred method of tooth replacement because of their durability and how well they function.

What to Do If You Have Lost a Tooth?

If you have a fractured or missing tooth, the first step is contacting our Monmouth County dental office. At Comprehensive Dentistry, we provide x-rays and in-depth examinations of the issues that will get your oral health back on track. If the area is bleeding, clean it out immediately, you can do this with water or a saline solution. If you have the tooth, keep it and preserve it in a saline solvent or cold milk before your dental visit. Our dentists are very skilled with tooth re-insertion if the tooth is salvageable. Do not wait to see what happens to your tooth first, prolonging the waiting period may worsen your condition, leading to infection which can afflict your surrounding teeth and internal health.

Dental Implants

Restorations are common solutions to oral disease and tooth replacements. There are varied treatments and options when it comes to restorations that are unique to each patient. According to the Center for Disease Control, the major risks for tooth loss include tooth decay and gum disease that worsens over time with age due to lack of salivation, disease, and physical limitations. Tooth loss can result from advanced gum disease, infection, and trauma. While dental bridges are an affordable option for replacement, dental implants offer results that are both more natural-looking and long-lasting.

Implants are a highly trusted solution because they can prevent changes to your bone structures and facial features, as well as make your smile look and feel healthy once again. With proper care, they can last a lifetime without needing replacement. Dr. Anthony Mancino provides implants at his office in Wall, NJ, as a reliable, long-term solution for missing teeth. Dental restorations range from bridges, crowns, implants, fillings, and dentures. All of these services are available at our Monmouth County practice.

Now you can replace your ill fitting dentures with implant retained dentures.

What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are small metal posts that function just like tooth roots. They are used to connect dental crowns, bridges, or dentures directly to your jawbone. First used in 1965, they have since become an important part of cosmetic and restorative dentistry because they can restore both aesthetics and health to your smile.

How Are They Placed?

The dental implant process consists of an impression. The prosthetic created will have the exact size, shape, and color that will fit naturally into the mouth. A bone graft is used to create the foundation for the implant. Patients that had missing teeth for a while require a special bone graft that is usually taken from their own mouth bones. If there is a solid bone base the implant will commence with unique titanium screws fixated into the jaw that require at least 2 to 6 months to heal for the bone tissue to integrate with the implant. After the healing process is complete, a prosthetic is connected to the implant known as an abutment. Throughout the entire process, our staff will ensure the patient is comfortable and relaxed for an effective, and painless procedure.

Dental implant treatment typically requires several appointments:

Consultation

Before the implant treatment, patients must have healthy gums without any underlying infection. Dr. Mancino will evaluate your smile and determine whether you are a good candidate for implants. He will also create a detailed treatment plan that meets your needs, goals, and budget.

Preparatory procedures

If you need a tooth extraction due to infection or a bone graft or sinus lift to counter insufficient jawbone volume, these will be performed a few months prior to your surgery.

Abutments and impressions

Once you have healed fully, your connector will be attached to the implant during a second minor procedure. The doctor can then take impressions from which your new restoration will be customized.

Restoration placement

After your restoration is made in a trusted lab, you can come back to our office to have your permanent restoration placed.

However, because every smile is different, every process is different. Your treatment process will be entirely personalized based on your unique needs.

Dental implants can be combined with any restoration including crowns, bridges, and dentures look and feel more natural than traditional restorations.

How long do dental implants last?

The typical screw used for implants, which resembles a tooth root, is made from titanium. There are a few types of titanium dental implants that your dentist can choose from. Most are shaped like a screw, which gives them a greater surface area to increase osseointegration potential.

The titanium is durable and long-lasting, but how long your dental implants last can be affected by how long to take care of your implants. Although the implant itself will never have cavities, the surrounding teeth are at risk without a regular hygienic oral routine. If you see your dentist every six months, consume a low-sugar diet, floss and brush your teeth daily, and avoid biting down extremely hard items, they can last up to 25 years. You will not need to replace your dental implant unless:
  • It becomes loose
  • You develop an infection
  • It becomes damaged
Unhealthy gums can cause jawbone contamination which will affect how long your implant lasts. If your implant or gums feel painful, contact our Comprehensive Dentistry office immediately.

What pain management is provided?

Before your procedure, you will be given anesthesia. Some people feel a bit unstable after anesthesia, so be careful standing up suddenly for the first few hours until it wears of. Otherwise, you may feel light-headed at times. Be sure to have someone drive you to and from your appointment.

For pain management, it is recommended to take ibuprofen, such as Motrin and Advil, every 4-6 hours or as directed on the bottle or by your dentist. Your dentist may also prescribe an anti-inflammatory drug as well as antibiotics. Pain comes with infection, so you will need to take your antibiotic on a regular schedule to prevent that. If you cannot take ibuprofen then you can take Tylenol for pain.

What are the risks of dental implants?

Risks and complications from dental implants are rare, but they can occur. Most of the time they are easily treated. The risks include infection at the surgical site:

  • Pain, tingling or numbness in your teeth, gums, lips or chin
  • If your artificial tooth was implanted in the upper jaw they may develop sinus problems
  • Damage to other teeth or blood vessels

Be sure to follow the doctor’s instructions for post-surgery care. The tips and plan you received are customized to optimize your health and recovery.

How do I take care of my dental implants?

Like any procedure, there is a healing phase. This phase typically lasts a few days while the patient gets accustomed to their new implant. Because dental implants are so strong and durable they are relatively simple to care for. You can enjoy an active lifestyle without worrying about your implant falling out. Aftercare consists of brushing and flossing your teeth just as you would normally do. Scheduling semi-annual visits with our Monmouth practice is a guaranteed way to maintain your implants and prevent your surrounding teeth from infection. There are some foods that you should avoid immediately after your dental implant surgery in order to speed up the recovery process. The foods that you should avoid include:
  • Chips
  • Crackers
  • Nuts or seeds
  • Hard cookies
  • Gum
  • Any sticky or chewy foods
  • Foods that are highly acidic such as soft drinks and orange juice
  • Candy
  • Alcoholic beverages

During the first 24 hours after your procedure, you will want to stick to a diet of liquids and soft foods. You may drink smoothies, milkshakes, or eat oatmeal, soup, and yogurt. You can incorporate soft foods, such as pasta and boiled potatoes and bananas, as your healing progresses.

It may be tempting to think that you can drink through a straw but you actually don’t want to do that. Using a straw will loosen or break the blood clots that must form in your mouth to help you heal. If you want to eat your favorite soup or drink your favorite milkshake, then either use a spoon or drink from the cup.

Long-Term Care

For long-term care of your dental implants, you need to listen to the instructions that were given to you by your dentist. It’s important in the days after your surgery to keep the area around the implant free of bacteria and plaque that can cause infection. Your dentist will suggest or prescribe a mouthwash that will prevent biofilm buildup that leads to infection, such as peri-implantitis, which is an inflammation of the soft and hard tissues around a dental implant.

Benefits of Implants

Dental implants offer many benefits for patients with missing teeth. They can:

Flatter your facial features

When your teeth are missing, you may be concerned about changes to your appearance, gaps, and structural changes that make you look older than you are. By replacing missing teeth, implants and restorations can rejuvenate your look.

Prevent teeth from shifting

When topped with crowns, bridges, or dentures, dental implants prevent your surrounding teeth from moving to compensate for the gap in your bite.

Help dentures feel more secure

While traditional dentures are a great option for patients with missing teeth, implant-supported options do not slip or click because they are fastened to your implants.

Prevent bone loss

Dental implants can prevent the bone loss that often occurs after tooth loss. This is important because bone loss can affect other teeth and change the shape of your face.

Last a long time

Dental implants have shown great long-term success, with a success rate well over 95 percent, according to the Institute for Dental Implant Awareness. Because of the way they look and function, dental implants can increase your self-confidence and improve your overall quality of life.
